One of the biggest attractions of podcasts for me is their portability. Thanks to my trusty iRiver iFP-899, I can down my favorite shows and then listen to them just about anywhere … or doing just about anything.

In my case, I regularly listen to podcasts when I’m:

  • Driving to work (using a cassette adapter), as I do most days of the week
  • Taking public transportation (train and bus) to work, as I do occasionally
  • Out for a walk
  • Washing the dishes, though be careful — I nearly fell over laughing once during an episode of the then-free Ricky Gervais Show
  • Cooking dinner in the evening or eating a solo breakfast in the morning
  • Folding my laundry — uncannily, I’m usually taking in an episode of Student Loan Radio
  • Watering the garden in the evenings
  • Getting ready for bed — try a good music show here, like C.C. Chapman’s Accident Hash.

I also listen to podcasts directly at my desktop computers, both at home and in the office. Here, podcasts provide good audio background when I’m doing a repetitive task or light web surfing.

As podcasts are portable, they’re also flexible. I can listen to part of an episode while commuting to work in the morning and then finish it when headed home in the evening. Somehow, For Immediate Release, which regularly clocks in at 60-90 minutes per episode, seems to fit the bill for this scenario.

How do you take in your favorite podcasts?
