Last week I wrote about a new blogging venture by Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Boston’s Roman Catholic archbishop.
Well, the blog — Cardinal Seán’s Fall Trip To Rome — has been up and running for about a week now, and the early signs are promising.
As promised by the archdiocese, O’Malley has written at least one post per day since the start of his overseas trip. The entries are detailed and personal, and often include dozens of photos with descriptive captions (O’Malley’s staff, according to last week’s Boston Globe story, is adding in the photos).
Thankfully, the blog is also allowing comments, and there have been plenty of them — more than 40 to two of the posts, in fact! Here are the words from one reader that I think capture the spirit of most of the comments:
Your Eminence,
Thank you so much for creating this blog, and for sharing your thoughts, your journey, and the beautiful photos. I feel like I am able to travel with you in spirit! Thank you most of all for sharing so much of your self – your thoughts and prayers. You are a joy. Boston is so blessed to have you. I had to laugh, when I read that you packed more books than you could possibly read on your trip – I tend to do that too – wishful thinking, I guess! It’s nice to know that our Cardinal is also a “book-a-holic”, LOL Also thank you for sharing your thoughts about St. Padre Pio, and so vividly describing your visit to San Giovanni Rotondo – beautiful!
Full credit to Cardinal O’Malley and the Boston archdiocese for their commitment to the blog so far. I hope they will keep this “experiment” going, and that O’Malley can continue to deliver messages that resonate with the Catholic community.
I’ll also stand by my suggestion from last week: for the blog to grow successfully after O’Malley has returned from Rome, the cardinal will ultimately have to tackle some of the tougher topics that remain on the hearts and minds of Catholics in Boston.
But this is definitely an excellent start.
