Reflections of a 30-year-old man

Birthdays — for me, at least — are always a time for reflection. I like to think about what has happened in my life during the last year and what might be coming in the next 365 days.
I want to do the former in this post. As a 29-year-old, I poured a good amount of my energies, creativity, drive, and personal travel budget (!) into learning about and engaging in social media. It’s a place where I’ve found my voice, where my professional ambitions lie, and where I meet the most fascinating people.
In the end, my work in this space always does point back to the people — to the new colleagues I have gained and the new friends I have made because of blogging, podcasting, geek meetups, and *Camps (BarCamp, PodCamp, CaseCamp).
So as I turn 30 today, I give you the names of 30 people that I have met — most of them in person, and others virtually — for the first time in the last year whose work, passion, and friendship help fuel my dedication to new media:
- Laura Allen – You’ve helped me to say what I do in 15 seconds, and now you’re helping to bring PodCamp to New York City.
- My son Amani – You’re not yet three weeks old, and thanks to social media, you’re already a star.
- Michael Bailey – Thanks to you, anybody can attach an audio comment to this post. Your big break will come. I know it.
- Jenny Attiyeh – Thank you for coming to PodCamp.
- Leesa Barnes – Next time you drive down to Boston from Toronto, remember to bring a road map.
- Mike Bellina – I was much better at sticking to a consistent podcasting production schedule when I had you on board
- Chris Brogan – You landed your dream job — and you earned it.
- Christopher Carfi – So this is what fatherhood is like.
- Ted Demopoulos – Featuring me in a book? Dangerous.
- Terry Fallis – Enjoy your insight into PR — and proper English.
- Doug Haslam – Keep leading the charge in Boston for PR’s adoption of social media.
- Joseph Jaffe – crayon is your life after Life After the 30-Second Spot. Screw a second book.
- Mitch Joel – My mentor. I’m seeing the “six pixels” in everything now.
- David Jones – Thanks for the PR schoolin’. After all, you “know stuff.”
- Reid Givens - A like-minded social-media-driven traveler.
- John C. Havens – I appreciate not only your commitment to podcasting, but to helping other dads.
- Neville Hobson – Indeed.
- Shel Holtz – I like mornings, too, but getting up at 5am every day?
- Lee Hopkins – New Comm Road appreciates your “God” voice.
- Ed Lee – Can’t wait to share a pint or two with you up in Toronto.
- Andrea Mercado – You’re easily the most entertaining librarian I’ve ever met … unless we’re counting Ms. Dewey.
- Jay Moonah – You drove from Toronto to Boston to play podsafe music at the first-ever PodCamp. That just rocks.
- Christopher Penn – I’ve listened to more episodes of the Financial Aid Podcast than any other show. Five or six podcasts every single week. I’m always impressed.
- Nicolas Pin – The best WordPress designer I know. Gracias por tu ayuda.
- Steve Runner – I’m still not a runner, but that doesn’t stop me listening to you podcast all about it. Run long and taper, Steve.
- Guido Stein – Thanks for reminding us at PodCamp that we all have a unique story to tell.
- Stephen Turcotte – I’m grateful for your encouragement and advice. Congratulations to Scout and Spherion on your award.
- MaryHelen Votral – You’re going to be one hell of a blogger.
- Adam Weiss – Watching and listening to you hold court at PodCamp Boston was a thing of beauty.
- Dan York – Great chat over breakfast in September.
Yes, this is a veritable love fest. But, hey, it’s my birthday. I’m allowed.

03|Nov|2006 2Happy 30th. You’re the only guy I know whose name has become a verb. “I’m going to pull a Bryper and take a bus, cab and roller skates to meet a bunch of social media geeks.”

03|Nov|2006 3Hey Bryan,

03|Nov|2006 4Thanks, guys!
Uhm, Dave, you just used “Bryper” as a noun … but I’ll take it as a compliment (rather than a complement) just the same.

06|Nov|2006 8Bryan,
Happy belated b-day!
Today is another b-day, my daughter’s 4th.
I’m pretty sure I was never 4 – I’d remember SOMETHING. 30? – possible, but that’s a hazy period of my memory
And I’m glad to feature you in every book I write!!
Neville Hobson
06|Nov|2006 9Belated best wishes, Bryan.
Indeed
Leesa
06|Nov|2006 10Happy belated indeed. And my roadtrip spanning 8 states and 2 provinces to get to 1 Podcamp has become such a great story to illustrate why people need a roadmap in planning their podcast strategy before they start podcasting.
So, have a good one and continue to be who you are – an awesome guy who really knows how to use social media to connect and build relationships.

06|Nov|2006 11Bryan!
Thank you so much for your praise and support. I seriously wouldn’t have been as inspired or dedicated to increasing our blogosphere presence.
Now, just have to live up to your high praise and make you proud!
Any help getting people to CMAccess.net would help too!
(you already do, just thought I’d throw it out there!)
best, and happy birthday again!

I think you have achieved the distinction of writing the first (and probably last) “Doug Haslam” Technorati tag!

12|Jan|2007 16[...] So, I shall update this post with a collection of the 33 people who have made me smile, laugh and feel generally positive about things over the past year. I’m following a post that Bryper did on his birthday and I thought it was a nice touch, so I’m going to do it here. [...]
