Ten new PodCamps I’d like to see

A post by Chris Brogan yesterday announcing that PodCamp Europe will take place on June 12-13 in Stockholm, Sweden (wish I could go!) got me thinking: where else should PodCamp expand to?
Here are 10 possibilities I came up with during the breakfast hour today:
- PodCamp Down Under. Either Australia or New Zealand will do. I’m looking at you, Lee Hopkins, to spearhead this effort.
- PodCamp Summer Solstice. Tie in a PodCamp with summer solstice celebrations in a place like Fairbanks, Alaska, where the sun literally never sets from June 20-22. If a baseball game can start in Fairbanks at 10:30pm each year and be played in its entirety without artificial lights, then add a PodCamp into the festivities as well?
- PodCamp Carnaval. Brazil is on my Top 5 countries-I’d-like-visit-but-haven’t-yet-been-able-to list. Let’s have a PodCamp there, and incorporate it into the mother of all parties: Carnaval.
- PodCamp in the Park. PodCruise Miami will partially be breaking the mold later this year, but to date, PodCamps have traditionally been indoor events. Let’s hold a PodCamp in a public park. All we need are a good sound system and some lawn chairs.
- PodCampGround. (Alternate title: PodCamp Pitch a Tent). For a true “camping” experience and to really get outdoors, add in woods and tents. Build a bonfire, grill up some meat, break out the guitar, and talk — or sing? — about podcasting and new media.
- PodCamp Disneyworld. Visit Disneyworld with your family during the day, and then PodCamp it up at a nearby hotel or resort in the evening. Requirement: a presentation by at least one of the Disney characters.
- PodCamp Across America. (Alternate title: PodCamp Cross Country) If Amanda Congdon, Steve Garfield, and Jamie O’Brien can travel across the country and blog and/or podcast about it, then why not a group of PodCamp enthusiasts? The mission, should you choose to accept it: make a cross-country trek, and hold PodCamp-centric meetups all along the way.
- PodCamp Lunch Break. Are you the new-media evangelist at your company, the one who’s trying to teach your colleagues about the benefits of podcasting, blogging, and social networking? How about hosting a series of lunches for your colleagues, then, in which you do just that? Just dispense with the “lunch-and-learn” moniker and use PodCamp Lunch Break instead. And in the spirit of PodCamp, be sure to give your colleagues the opportunity to start leading their own sessions as well.
- PodCamp Twitter. How about using Twitter to present a PodCamp session to the online masses? You’ll need to get creative to break your presentation into a series of 140-character-maximum chunks, but don’t let that stop you!
- PodCamp Outer Space. Know any new-media-savvy astronauts?
Let’s have your ideas, too!

03|Apr|2007 1I want to modify #7 to “Podcamp Cannonball Run”

03|Apr|2007 2Your idea #7 is a brilliant one!

03|Apr|2007 3How about something at the Beach? Like PodCamp Hilton Head or PodCamp OuterBanks.

03|Apr|2007 4I Love #7, but I’d change it to “North America” for obvious reasons..:)
and I’d add :
#11 : Podcamp Bryan Person’s house
Bryan
03|Apr|2007 5John: Love it!
Mike: Nearly included PodCamp by the Beach in my list! Excellent way to go.

03|Apr|2007 6If we cannot combine our favorite travel destinations with our social media work, what is the point of attendance?
Seven more deady sins:
7. PodCamp Yankee Stadium (wear Red Sox attire and laugh as A-Fraud and his band of pitching imposters miss out on the playoffs in 2007 – OK, I know the Red Hose are down a game, but Dice Dice Baby on Thursday
6. PodCamp New Orleans – nothing says social media like stumbling into Mother’s (still buzzed) for breakfast of cheese grits, eggs, biscuits. By the way, Dick & Jenny’s and Bayonna are still my favs for upscale fare; Acme Oyster for crawfish, namesake and ice cold Dixie
5. PodCamp Saratoga – Beautiful race track (pretend you are a NY gangster circa 1923) and amazing fried chicken at Hattie’s
4. PodCamp Santa Monica – We can ring up expense accounts at Shutters like we’re in advertising, not PR
3. PodCamp Paradise, Boston, May 3 – The Knitters are playing (it’s the eve of my 42nd birthday)
2. PodCamp Malden, Mass. – Former home of social media gurus at Topaz Partners. I miss Hugh O’Neils, Veez, Dockside, Artichokes and especially Dom’s Sausage
1. PodCamp Las Vegas – No clarification needed
I hope to meet a lot of you at PodCamp New York this weekend. Cheers, Adam

03|Apr|2007 7Lovin’ PodCampDownUnder!! What a great excuse to go to a place I’ve always wanted to go. Here are some more ideas:
* PodCampAloha – In Hawaii. A chance to go another place I’ve never been (and finally meet Roxanne Darling).
* PodCampCookout – At my house, centrally located in CT right of I-95 between Boston and NYC. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos only minutes away, as is Misquamicut Beach in Westerly, RI.

03|Apr|2007 8@BobG: Why not keep it as PodCamp Across America and include stops in Canada as well?
@Adam: PodCamp Las Vegas and PodCamp New Orleans would certainly be fun. PodCamp Malden, MA would be extraordinarily convenient.
For those of you not from New England, a “cookout” is a barbecue. Great idea, JoeC!

03|Apr|2007 9I want to go to them all! Of course, I’m wondering how I would actually produce podcasts if I were traveling to all these fun places.

03|Apr|2007 10Any chance of a PodCamp Naked Club Med?
Bryan
03|Apr|2007 11Lee, as long as you adhere to these “Rules of PodCamp,” then you really create any kind of PodCamp you please.
“There are FIVE rules which govern what may or may not be called a PodCamp. If your planned event meets all 5, you can call it a PodCamp.
1. All content created must be released under a Creative Commons license:
2. All attendees must be allowed to participate. (subject to limitations of physical space, of course)
3. All sessions and events must be free of charge to attend.
4. The event must be new-media focused.
5. The financials of a PodCamp must be fully disclosed in an open ledger, except for any donor/sponsor who wishes to remain anonymous.”
Doug Haslam
03|Apr|2007 12Hard to beat Adam, but hera re a few alternatives:
1) PodCamp Fenway: because Yankee Stadium is a toilet. Fenway Park is a much nicer toilet.
2) Podcamp Today Show: It might be something if the Idiot Window outside of the Today shoe studio is full of podcasters doing their own live recordings.
3) PodCamp Auto: Hands please- how many record podcasts — or at least audio comments– while driving? Thought so. So, not meetups along the way, but actually while driving. And “Gumball Rally” John, not “Cannonball Run.” Please.
4) Mile High PodCamp: If a car, why not a plane? Approved electronic devices only.
5) PodCamp San Tropez: Trust me on this one, guys
6) Podcamp Antarctica: Hearty souls make the real “A” list
6) And another vote for PodCamp Malden, MA– Lunch at Cornucopia, and a tour of the dollar stores on Pleasant St.
Gumball!

06|Jul|2007 13Adam Zand,
PodCamp New Orleans 2008 is in the works. How about Podcamp New Orleans 2008 presented by Topaz Partners?
Adam Zand
24|Jul|2007 14Hi Chris,
Thanks for the invite. I liked your blog post on how you came up with the idea – http://christopherjohnston.blogspot.com/2007/07/podcamp-new-orleans-2008.html . We’re limited to the Boston event, but we’ll sponsor some beer for you at the Boston event – glad you’re coming for that.
I know what it means to miss New Orleans, Adam
