Which 5 sites are most essential to your daily workflow?

“How many pre-loaded tabs do you have set on your browser?”
No, this wasn’t a new-media pickup line. Instead, it was a question of interest that Joe Thornley posed to me not long after we shook hands and sat down for a beverage at a fine Back Bay establishment last night (Laura Fitton from Great Presentations Mean Business joined us well).
My answer? Five. When I fire up Firefox each day, here are the tabs that open:
- Monster Career Advice. Hey, it’s my day job. Nuff said.
- Google Reader. Keeping up with my RSS feeds is an integral part of my day, and my recent switch to Google Reader has made this task infinitely more manageable.
- Gmail. E-mail client. Calendar manager. Chat client. Address book. Document repository. I’d be lost without it.
- Twitter. My virtual water cooler; place to leave sometimes-meaningful, sometimes-meaningless short posts; and source of dozens of cool links and ideas each day from my online network.
- Ta-da Lists. My running checklist of ongoing projects and next actions. I’m no master of the Getting Things Done system, but this site keeps me more or less on track.
These are the five sites most essential to my daily workflow. What are yours?

21|Jun|2007 5I think Chris Hambly has it right…Google, Google, Google…
Let’s face it:
1. Google (for search)
2. Gmail
3. Google Calendar
4. Google Reader
5. … um … Not Google! I’d say WordPress (for my various blogs)

21|Jun|2007 6In this order:
1. JibberJobber.com (first reason, to make sure the server isn’t down (!!), second reason, because I update info on my contacts throughout the day)
2. Gmail
3. My blog (I blog first thing in the morning and it just stays up as I usually refer to various posts throughout the day)
4. Twitter
… and from there, lots of surfing.

21|Jun|2007 71. Google Calendar
2. Gmail
3. Twitter
4. Facebook
5. Google Reader
Bonus 5
1. Facebook
2. Feedburner
3. Typepad (blog)
4. CoComment (comment tracker)
5. Google Docs
What are your bonus five?

21|Jun|2007 8Now, David, I think you cheated. I understand you like Facebook, but including it on your list of essential five and bonus five? That’s a little dodgy in my book
My bonus 5:
1. Google Docs
2. My WordPress Bryper blog
3. Facebook
4. Libsyn
5. Feedburner
And holding down the No. 11 spot but having the potential to move up a notch or two in the next couple of weeks: iGoogle.

21|Jun|2007 9Great post! Here are my five:
1. Gmail is my nerve center (it’s all scripted up with Greasemonkey, so it integrates my other favorites: Google Calendar, Google Reader, Remember the Milk and a nifty GTD Inbox application)
2. Twitter, for constant contact and ideas
3. Blogger (my central repository for 2 blogs & a podcast) for draft posts, which I can get to during other times of the day
4. Feedburner/Sitemeter/Libsyn for my stats
5. Desktop app: Outlook
It’s amazing how Google Reader (or any feedreader, for that matter) has changed my viewing habits. I could have listed 20 other sites that are part of my daily routine, but I realized that I only visit those sites after seeing their RSS feeds. It’s all about the reader these days.

21|Jun|2007 10Thinking I need to get someone to pimp my browser! I probably still do too much of this manually…
usually open:
1) Google reader
2) Tab after tab of articles from my google reader that I want to read
3) Outlook
4) Wordpress
5) Twitter
Bonus:
1) You Tube. Funny cat videos and anything with Bernard the animated Polar Bear will appease the 23 month old
2) Trillian. I hop on when need to yap with h-band at work, otherwise try to stay off
3) Statty things like technorati, socialmeter, etc. seem to have faded for me
4) I use a lot of folders & dragged/dropped links in Firefox to organize workflow too. a little clunky.
5) For daily Twitterflix updates: Amazon/IMDB & a few other sites I use to pick quotes and create posts at http://Twitter.com/twitterflix
While I use LinkedIn frequently, and am edging my way gingerly into Facebook, they’re not 24×7 yet.

21|Jun|2007 12I love Joe, he is a great conversationalist.
I actually only have four, adn not all are open in browser tabs, but they are essential to my online life:
1. Yahoo Mail
2. Sage (lightweight feedreader)
3. Microsoft Live Writer 2.0 Beta (AWESOME for posting)
4. Twitter (most of the time)

21|Jun|2007 13Man. i’ve been killing myself all day on this one. Fact is, I don’t use many websites, so much as I use web services. And I’m not entirely sure that ‘productivity’ is the final result, either.
1) Google – I guess its the goto site for any question I might have.
2) .Mac mail – keeps me up with what I may have to do for my freelance clients once I get home from the day job.
3) iChat – Keeps me from having to walk all over creation to talk to colleagues or leave voice mail with colleagues that may be at meetings. Also, my freelance clients can find me if they need to talk real quick.
4) iTunes – This keeps me going all day, with music, audio podcasts and the occassional video podcast.
5) Schmedley.com – Starting to really like this site. Give me a whole lot of personalized info I may need at a moments notice.
Bonus?!? man. I had a hard enough time with just the first 5, and I think 3 of them don’t really count.
1) Twitterific – keeps me thinking all day long as it downloads interesting thoughts and questions from twitter. Thanks guys!
2) Woot.com – Gotta check it at least once a day.
