Last week Dan York blogged about a topic that hits home with those of us who love RSS: Staying informed online without visiting the actual websites that publish the information we’re consuming:

I don’t go to friends’ websites. (Sorry!) I don’t go to my employer’s website. I don’t go to any organization’s websites. I don’t go to my city’s website. Every once in a while I might hit CNN’s web page or a weather site, but that’s about it.

But one of the things Dan does do is load up on RSS feeds, so that updates from sites come to him, through his reader, once they’ve been published. Thanks to RSS, Dan doesn’t have to:

remember to check the original website in the first place — a real problem for most of us who struggle with information overload from time to time

spend even a nanosecond wondering whether the original site has been updated — if it has, his RSS reader will tell him

RSS = efficiency

Consuming more information in less time is why I use RSS, too. In one place — Google Reader, in my case — I can read blogs and mainstream media stories, watch videos, check out my friends’ photos, find out who’s talking about me online, keep track of price updates for flights I’d like to take, catch the latest local weather forecast, and share my favorite posts with my online network — all without ever visiting any of the original websites that published that media. Pretty damn efficient if you ask me.

How do you use your RSS reader?

Anything I’ve missed? How else do make RSS work for you?

The Boston chapter of the Social Media Club will reconvene next Thursday night, December 6, from 6:00 – 9:30, for a discussion on “the future of social media.” The event takes place at the Boston Ballroom at the Colonnade Hotel and is free to attend. Register by adding your name to the event wiki: future of social media.

(At last December’s Social Media Club Boston meeting, Chris Heuer, center, called my name and awarded me with an in-home dinner for two, courtesy of a Boston-area restaurant. Foolishly, I never cashed in on the prize.)

Joe Thornley and Maggie Fox, who both hail from north of the border, are expected to be among those in attendance. If the only reason you go is to meet them, you won’t be disappointed!

The Social Media Club event will mark the one-year anniversary of the Boston chapter. And much like last year, the December meeting will coincide with the annual Society for New Communications Research (SNCR) Symposium & Awards Gala, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, December 5 and 6.

Tickets to the SNCR conference aren’t free, but they will give you access to two days’ worth of thought-provoking presentations, discussions, and (of course) research on the ways in which social media is impacting how we communicate.

You can register online (use the code “SNCR100″ to save $100) or call (650) 331-0083 for more information.

Not the headline you were expecting from a guy who works for Monster, right?

Well, the time has come to declare the death of the traditional resume for the creative professional.

If you’re an online advertiser, digital marketer, or social media-focused PR pro, then you know that the one- or two-page resume that you’re supposed to send to the hiring manager or HR coordinator does very little justice to your work. To wit:

It doesn’t reflect the thought leadership of your blog or podcast.

It doesn’t list the online responses to the award-winning YouTube video you produced for a client or the comments you received to a post-mortem blog entry about your ground-breaking integrated social media campaign.

It doesn’t tell your potential employer where and how you’re commenting online.

It doesn’t show the depth and breadth of your professional network or online presence.

Let’s face it: The traditional resume just does a woefully inadequate job of telling your career story and showcasing your brilliant work to a recruiter.

My solution? Let’s banish the traditional resume to the bygone era it comes from and adopt the social media resume as its replacement.

My Boston podcasting and PodCamp colleague Christopher S. Penn first coined the term “social media resume” back in February of this year, and he even produced a sample in Google Pages.

To demonstrate how I might apply for a creative position using the SMR format, I’ve largely followed Chris’s lead and produced my own sample: Bryan Person’s social media resume.

Here are some of the elements I’ve included in my SMR that wouldn’t “fit” into a the traditional resume:

A purpose-built del.icio.us portfolio page, with links to some of my best blog posts, podcasts episodes, and conference presentations

A pointer to my LinkedIn profile

A headshot of me

An embedded episode of my New Comm Road podcast

A link to my shared items in Google Reader

Links to my Flickr photos, Twitter messages, and Facebook profile

What else might I have added?

A link to my blog and podcast profile pages in Technorati

An introductory audio or video message (Chris did the latter)

Screen captures of websites I had created

I’m putting out two challenges here:

I want to see more of my colleagues creating social media resumes.

I want to hear from recruiters and hiring managers for creative positions who are ready to ditch the stale, traditional resume and embrace the social media resume as the new gold standard.

Wouldn’t that be refreshing?

Technorati Tags: Social media resume

And as the packed-house crowds at monthly Social Media Club gatherings, blogger dinners, PodCamps, and impromptu Tweetups routinely indicate, the socialness of social media doesn’t just happen online. We really dig the face-to-face conversations, too.

The latest example: This past Wednesday’s Social Media Breakfast 2, which brought together more than 50 Boston-area marketers, PR pros, entrepreneurs, and new-media enthusiasts.

Our formal program, which included a presentation from Larry Weber, was set to end at 9:30, but well over half the attendees stuck around until close to 11:00, many of them taking part in a breakout session on social media business models that David Cutler facilitated. (Thanks to Julia Roy, the session was Ustreamed, too. You can watch by clicking below).

Australia’s first-ever PodCamp will be held in Perth in October. Here’s the text of the e-mail from organizers Jared Madden and Adam Purcell:

Today ended the ‘Stake Your Interest’ campaign for PodCamp Australia, and it was no surprise that Perth has secured it’s place as the host for the first PodCamp to be held on Australian soil. Congratulations to Perth! The final results are:

                               Perth – 152 votes

Sydney – 84 votes

                               Melbourne – 33 votes

                               Brisbane – 8 votes

                               Adelaide – 6 votes

Dates, venue and Wiki will be forthcoming with PodCamp Perth scheduled for sometime in October this year.

If you are interested in volunteering, speaking or sponsoring, please let us know so we can begin to co-ordinate the logistics.

Looking forward to PodCamp Perth!

And as for you disappointed voters from Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide, there’s no stopping you from organizing and holding a PodCamp in your city, too!

As much as I like Google Reader for managing my RSS feeds, its display of Technorati results for my customized search terms is causing me grief.

Here’s a snapshot of post headlines that include the term “Bryan Person” (yes, I ego surf; don’t you?):

At one point, I had several screens’ — and days’ — worth of posts that all linked to a post about “peanut butter”. What a pain!

Two additional notes:

This duplication doesn’t appear in Google Reader using feeds from Google Blog Search for the same search term

This duplication doesn’t appear when I cross-check the Technorati results in Bloglines.

I know I’m not alone here, as Chip Griffin mentioned having similar troubles in a media monitoring minute segment on a recent episode of the For Immediate Release podcast (disclosure: Chip Griffin’s company, CustomScoop, also sponsors my New Comm Road podcast).

Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

Most of the bloggers and podcasters I know have the published blogs and podcasts that you actually see and hear, and a whole bunch of others dancing around in their heads.

I’m no exception. But this week, I decided to make one my “potential projects” a reality with the by launching the Connected Worker website.

Connected Worker will mix my passion for social media, which I talk about on this blog and on the New Comm Road podcast, with my interest in career development. It will focus on how to use the social web to build a stronger personal brand and professional profile.

I hope you’ll stop on over and take a look: Connected Worker.

Rest assured that this blog isn’t going anywhere, though it may take me some to work out which content is most appropriate for this site and what will work best over at Connected Worker.

This is a new challenge, and I’m excited about it.
