The Boston chapter of the Social Media Club will reconvene next Thursday night, December 6, from 6:00 – 9:30, for a discussion on “the future of social media.” The event takes place at the Boston Ballroom at the Colonnade Hotel and is free to attend. Register by adding your name to the event wiki: future of social media.

(At last December’s Social Media Club Boston meeting, Chris Heuer, center, called my name and awarded me with an in-home dinner for two, courtesy of a Boston-area restaurant. Foolishly, I never cashed in on the prize.)

Joe Thornley and Maggie Fox, who both hail from north of the border, are expected to be among those in attendance. If the only reason you go is to meet them, you won’t be disappointed!

The Social Media Club event will mark the one-year anniversary of the Boston chapter. And much like last year, the December meeting will coincide with the annual Society for New Communications Research (SNCR) Symposium & Awards Gala, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, December 5 and 6.

Tickets to the SNCR conference aren’t free, but they will give you access to two days’ worth of thought-provoking presentations, discussions, and (of course) research on the ways in which social media is impacting how we communicate.

You can register online (use the code “SNCR100″ to save $100) or call (650) 331-0083 for more information.

I was meant to lead a breakout session on Second Life at the Social Media Club meetup in Boston on Thursday — until the format changed.

Probably just as well. Holding up this placard up would high surely would have netted me more than my fair share of snickers.

Chris Heuer and Kristie Wells from Brain Jams teamed up with Todd Van Hoosear and the gang from Topaz Partners to host the very first Boston meetup of the Social Media Club last night. The event piggybacked on the two-day Inaugural SNCR Research Symposium / 1st Anniversary & Awards Celebration.

I made it to the SMC meetup, and I was part of some good discussions on:

ethics in social media

using new media in PR and marketing campaigns

importance of/problems with tagging

the need for and effectiveness of the social media release

building your personal brand and business through blogging

Second Life

While Chris and Kristie head back to their offices in Palo Alto, California this weekend, the Social Media Club will live on in Boston. The plan is to meet monthly and really try and tackle how to understand and best use social media in business communication.

Bookmark Boston’s Social Media Club wiki for information about upcoming meetups. The group welcomes both veterans and newcomers on the social media scene!

I also won one of two prizes given away on the night — an in-home dinner for two to be prepared by the executive chef from Simplicity restaurant in Boston’s North End. My wife will be thrilled!
