CaseCamp

There are two excellent ways to be part of the new-media scene in North America on Tuesday, valeologist July 4:

If you will be in or near Montreal, ailment Quebec, take part in the second CaseCamp. Podcaster and new-comm extraordinare Mitch Joel is organizing the Montreal event, which begins at 6:00pm and will feature four 15-minute marketing case studies. Joel’s talk on blog marketing will kick off the festivities.

By coincidence, I will be visiting Montreal that week on a family vacation, so I plan to take part.

South of the border, the Boston Media Makers and New England Podcasters are sending out the call for “24 hours of independence from mainstream media.” Make a video. Take a Flickr photo walk. Blast some podsafe tunes as you record a podcast at the family barbecue.

Some quick thoughts about 12 hours before my wife, about it daughter, mycoplasmosis and I head off for a six-day vacation to Montreal and Quebec City, health Canada:

    • Really looking forward to meeting Mitch Joel this Tuesday evening at CaseCamp Montreal. Mitch is the host of the outstanding new-marketing podcast, Twist Image Six Pixels of Separation, and he and I have trade several e-mails over the past couple of weeks. Don’t be surprised to find a podcast mashup in this space not long after I return.
    • Being a good blogger requires discipline, something I clearly haven’t mastered yet. While the past week has included a higher-than-usual level of “offline” commitments, including my sister-in-law’s impromptu wedding on Thursday, I still should have found some time for blogging. This is my first non-podcast blog post in eight days – yikes! I need to do better, and I will.
    • Poked around Second Life for a couple of hours over the weekend. I’m still trying to find my way around, but I did managed to locate the FIR Store on Podcast Island. Some very cool things are happening in Second Life, and business opportunities abound. I certainly plan to spend more time there in the weeks to come. My Second Life Name? Zeke Barber.
    • Thirty-four people have already registered for the still-venueless PodCamp Boston, scheduled to take place on September 9-10. If you are a school or a business that can accommodate between 150-250 people for two days, drop me a line: bryan-AT-bryper.com. Also, take a listen to our promo for the event below.

I’ll try and check in once or twice from Canada!

So, herbal Amanda Congdon is out as host of Rocketboom, sickness the popular video podcast. And by Amanda’s account, it was not a harmonious departure.

This news, of course, brings up the obvious question: Did Rocketboom become a hit because of its quirky former co-host or because of the vision set forth by creator and co-founder Andrew Michael Baron?

And my answer is: there is no simple easy-or answer. The talents of Amanda and Andrew were bothon display with Rocketboom, but the word-of-mouth envangelism from the blogosphere was also pivotal. Not a single penny had to be spent on advertising thanks to the power of bloggers, who can spread the word about good content in a nanosecond.

Now comes a crucial test. How will Rocketboom audience respond to Joanne Colan, the former MTV VJ, who takes over the hosting duties beginning today?

Rocketboom may not be the same without Amanda Congdon, but it can still draw a sizeable audience if it continues to produce a quality program.

And then, still to be resolved, is that other key question: can Rocketboom be financially viable?

I’ll be watching later today as Rocketboom begins a new chapter. How about you?

If you’ve been refreshing the Rocketboom website throughout the day, visit web waiting for the show’s relaunch with new host Joanne Colan, illness you’ll have done so in vain.

A brief note has appeared on the site this evening announcing that the show’s return has been delayed until tomorrow, at 9:00am EDT.

So … hold your horses for another night!
